Increase Bone Density and Treat Osteoporosis Naturally

According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation’s website, roughly 55 percent of Americans 50 years or older are affected by osteoporosis. They also report that while an estimated 10 million suffer from osteoporosis, about 34 million or more are at a high risk of developing osteoporosis. Although traditionally thought of as a disease of the elderly, particularly women, osteoporosis can attack people even before menopause. One major cause of osteoporosis is the lack of proper nutrients, not just calcium but a whole host of other vitamins. Osteoporosis occurs naturally in many people, but luckily, people can also treat their osteoporosis naturally.

To increase bone density and treat osteoporosis naturally, without pills or hormones, the first thing to do is to take a look at your diet. Small changes in the diet can have dramatic effects on bone density and either prevent or treat osteoporosis naturally. Adding calcium to one’s diet is an obvious choice, and there are many ways other than drinking milk to add more calcium into a diet. Vegetables such as broccoli are high in calcium. Foods containing Vitamin D are also effective. Vitamin D is often added to milk; check the next gallon of milk you buy to see if Vitamin D has been added, which is usually printed in large text on the front.

Low-impact exercise is another way to improve bone density. Because bones strengthen with use, just like muscles, some jogging or fast walking can provide that impact that will build up bones naturally. Before starting an exercise regimen, speak to your doctor. A doctor will be able to say what kinds of exercise your body can handle without risk of fractures. Need an easy way to add exercise into your daily routine? If possible, walk to work in the morning, or find another regular trip you normally make by car and replace it with walking. A brisk pace is best and will have the added benefit of not only being able to increase bone density naturally, thus helping with osteoporosis, but will help the walking person lose weight.
